National Card in Hungary: new residency option available to Russians in Hungary
The National Card in Hungary (“Nemzeti Kártya”) is one of the best residency options currently available to third-country nationals coming to Hungary. It offers various benefits compared to other types of residency, and from now on it is also available to Russian nationals.
Benefits of the National Card
The most attractive aspect of the National Card is that is available to both people interested in working or doing business in Hungary. It offers a simplified procedure compared to the regular work permit or business visa, while it still provides:
- Family unification
- Option for permanent residency after at least 3 years
- Option for a status change without travel to the home country
Since these three benefits are no longer available as a default but only with specific permit types, Russian national can now truly take advantage of the opportunities Hungary offers. They can get Hungarian residency easier, quicker, and with much better conditions than before. Once they have residency, they can open bank accounts, or change status as they wish.
After at least 3 years, the National Card can be turned into permanent residency, which offers even more benefits. After another 8 years residing in Hungary, you can even apply for citizenship and enjoy the privileges of being an EU citizen.
Requirements for application
Most importantly, you can apply for the National Card if you are a Russian National. Russia is just one of the eligible countries, however. You can read the full list here.
Moreover, just like with other residency options, you need to specify your plans in Hungary when you submit your application. This can involve starting a job or a business in Hungary, supported by the relevant documents (most importantly: labor contract or company documents).
